Spring Equinox • The Liver

The Spring Equinox is a threshold between worlds, when day and night briefly meet in balance and the light begins to overtake the darkness. In the old seasonal imagination, Spring does not simply arrive and cast Winter aside rather Spring emerges from Winter.

This is the essence of the Kissing the Hag myth: we encounter the old woman and what has withered and the forgotten aspect of the season, and instead of turning away, we lean towards her and offer the kiss. In that moment of intimacy with what appears old, barren or lifeless, there is a revelation: that life that has been waiting beneath the surface. The Hag carries the seed of Spring within her.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this movement from Winter into Spring is reflected in the transition from Water to Wood. Water holds the deep reserves of Winter: stillness, darkness, storage and the preservation of Jing/Essence.

The Spring winds stir the wood element and offers the first great movement of rising Yang. It is the green shoot pushing through the soil, the sap rising through the tree, life reaching upwards and outwards. Wood is associated with the Liver and Gallbladder: the Liver with the free and harmonious flow of Qi/Energy, and the Gallbladder with decision, direction and the courage to move. Like the young life emerging from the old Hag, Wood does not reject what came before; it draws upon the depths of Winter to find its direction and begin again.

And so Kissing the Hag becomes a Spring practice, an invitation to honour what has carried us through the darkness before rushing towards the new. We turn towards the places within ourselves that may feel dormant, aged, uncertain or unfinished, and listen for the life still moving underneath them.

As Yang rises and Wood begins to unfold, we allow the Liver Qi to flow, the Gallbladder to find its direction, and our own inner vision to awaken. We kiss the old season, and discover that she was carrying Spring all along.

Thus our meditative practices online these early weeks of Spring will be orientated towards the free flowing movement of energy and supporting the Liver and Gallbladder organs for vision, movement, planning and creating.
